Wawona Road (Highway 41)

If you go up Wawona Road, aka Highway 41, past Tunnel View
you'll come upon a long area of roadside parking. I think it is actually
a chain control area. 

At the far end of the parking area you can go over the wall, with some help from some 
conveniently placed rocks, and walk on a large granite area. From there
you get a different view of some iconic features.

This is called the Cascades. This last summer it was dry. This is the only place I
know from which you can actually see them.


You also get a different and higher view of El Capitan and Half Dome


There are few trees up here and while short they do have character.



Once again a different and higher view from the usual Tunnel View.




Did I mention it was a wee bit cold.




Stay tuned, I took an unplanned and last minute trip to the Merced
Wildlife Refuge. Oh boy.....

Mono Lake

During my recent trip to the east side of the Sierras I of course visited  Mono Lake. It's been almost 2 years since I've been in the area and was happy to see the lake has risen quite a bit. Some of the Tufas you were able to walk all the way around  now have one side under water. A good sight to see. Mono lake is about 45' below its historic levels due to the Los Angeles Department of Water diverting the normal creek inflow into the lake. An agreement was reached  in the 70's to restore the lake level to about 20' below historic levels. Very slowly, with drought years intervening, that seems to be happening. I've taken some beautiful sunrises at Mono Lake, every time I try for a sunset the clouds seem to disappear. I got lucky this time, but first some shots I took  before sunset. With the wind making the water a little choppy I didn't get the wonderful reflections the Tufas can offer. But there were some other oppo...

Foothill Wildflowers

I've been pretty lazy lately when it comes to editing photos. I have more from my trip to McCloud but in the meantime I'm posting some from a recent outing to the Central California Foothills near Sonora. This gave me a good opportunity to use my new Tokina 100mm Macro lens.  The wildflowers this year were somewhat disappointing, too much rain I guess. I thought it would be just the opposite The first up is of course a California Golden Poppy. All the photos I'm posting today are with the macro, except one. This flower surprised me. I don't think I have ever seen it before. I was luck with my flower guide because I opened it randomly to the right page. These I couldn't find in my guide. And last but not least. When I first saw this insect I thought it was a tiny bee. But looking closer I think it is actually a tiny wasp.  Go, See, Enjoy, Photograph Dave

Luminature at the Chaffee Zoo

Went to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo the other night with Friedhelm and Nancy to view the LUMINATURE exhibits. I was very pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect but this was a really great outing. I won't comment on the individual images since I think they pretty much speak for themselves.
